Pi Einstein Day

Posted by on Wednesday, March 14, 2012, In : Events

For those of you who are completely ignorant of the significance of March 14, today is Pi-Einstein Day (sometimes shortened to just Pi Day by the luddites and laymen). It is a big holiday among the geek world, and even the U.S. Government has recognized its importance.

First off, today is Albert Einstein's birthday. That alone makes it worth celebrating, as the great man not only developed the theory of relativity that he is famous for, but also provided proof of the existence of atoms with a...

Cyclotrons & Isotopes

Posted by on Tuesday, February 21, 2012,

There has been an interesting announcement from one of the teams at the TRIUMF national laboratory on the subject of medical isotope production. They are claiming that they have been able to produce a radioactive isotope known as Technetium-99m in a particle accelerator / cyclotron instead of a nuclear reactor. If there results hold up to scrutiny (which they should) and if it is economical, this could have a major impact on medical physics and on government policies on nuclear reactors.

The Loquino Project

Posted by Chris Bird on Friday, February 3, 2012,
I just got word that the Loquino project is completed now and was even mentioned on both the Make blog and the Arduino Forum. For those who aren't aware, this was a project that Mark Wilson developed combining two of my favorite things - my Grandiloquent Dictionary project and an Arduino microcontroller board to make an interesting little program.

Check it out, and if you have an Arduino board test it out.

Internet Censorship

Following the lead of internet icons such as Wikipedia and Mozilla and Firefox, and I shutting down all of my websites for the remainder of the day, as part of a global protest of the SOPA/PIPA laws currently before the US congress.

Let me be clear that I do not support piracy of copyrighted material. I myself have been a victim of piracy in the past, and we do need rules to restrict it. However the laws being discussed would give a single government the authority to shut down anything on the ...

Year In Review

Posted by on Saturday, December 31, 2011,
What an exciting year 2011 has been! For the scientific community and the tech community, this year has been marked with many new discoveries and seen the start of some fascinating new lines of research.

In the astronomy community there was excitement over the discovery by the Kepler experiment of an Earth like planet which may support life. There is no method available yet for determining if life is indeed present, but this planet is the right size and position to support all of the building ...

Beyond The Higgs

Posted by on Saturday, December 17, 2011,
Today's article should be considered as sort of a sequel to the last entry on the Higgs boson seach, and once again is inspired by the local media taking an interest in the possible discovery of a Higgs boson in the new year. (on a side note, I would like to remind the local media that a boson is a subatomic particle with specific spin properties, while a bosun is a member of the crew on a boat - there is a difference :) )

In the last few years there has been a lot of interest in searching for...

The Higgs

Posted by on Wednesday, December 14, 2011,
Due to an article in the local newspaper this morning, I have received a few questions and comments from friends and family on the nature of the Higgs boson, the search for it and the theory behind it. Although I have commented on this topic several times in the past, the time seemed right to review the Higgs model one more time.

For the last forty years or so, particle physicists have been constructing and refining the Standard Model which contains everything that we know about subatomic part...

Really Supermassive Black Hole

Posted by on Tuesday, December 6, 2011,
With the holiday season approaching, and everyone looking forward to devouring more than they should, comes an announcement from the astronomy community of an even bigger devourer...

Astronomers have new data from the depths of outer space, far past the edges of our own galaxy, to where there exists a galaxy which contains at its center a black hole thought to be 10 billion times more massive than our own sun. For comparison  our own Milky Way galaxy orbits a black hole which is a measly 4 mil...

Monty Hall Problem

Posted by on Monday, December 5, 2011,
As usual on a Sunday night, I was watching the weekly episode of the Mythbusters TV show, and to my surprise they were testing the Monty Hall problem. I had thought that by now it was so well explored that it wouldn't qualify as a myth, but then I realized that most people are still unaware of this curious example of deceptive statistics. And so for that reason, although the TV show did an excellent job of demonstrating this problem, I will give an overview here.

The Monty Hall problem is ver...

Entangled Diamonds

Posted by on Sunday, December 4, 2011, In : News
This week saw yet another interesting scientific result from Canadian physicists. Specifically, a team in Ontario has announced that they have detected quantum entanglement in a macroscopic system.

Since the birth of quantum mechanics over a century, it has been a puzzle due to its very odd but proven properties. Among these is the principle of quantum entanglement, in which two spatially separate objects affect each other without communicating in any ordinary way.

The standard example of this...

Superbubbles and Cosmic Rays

Posted by on Friday, November 25, 2011, In : News
Yet another mystery of space has been at least partially explained now.

For many decades (since 1912 to be precise) it has been known that the Earth is constantly being hit by high energy particles, known as cosmic rays, which originate from somewhere far out in space. And these are not just mildly energetic like we produce on Earth in particle accelerators, but many orders of magnitude more energetic than anything scientists can produce. But the source of these particles has been an unknown ...

The Search For Life

Posted by on Sunday, November 20, 2011, In : News
Canadians have one more thing to be proud of today.

Today NASA launched the Curiosity probe, the latest in a long history of robotic explorers sent to Mars to collect data and to search for signs of life present or past. This mission is going to travel to the red planet, and a robotic rover will descend to the surface. The target region was identified several years ago by an orbiting probe which identified a region of Mars which is covered in clay.

The presence of clay indicates that at some po...

This entry might be repetitive, but the article I wrote earlier this week didn't get saved or got erased, so I am reprinting it today. I apologize to those who have already read it.

This article is only of interest to a tiny fraction of readers, as it concerns a new preprint server for academic papers in physics and mathematics.

Faster Than Light Revisited

Posted by on Saturday, November 19, 2011,
It seems not so long ago I was writing an article on this blog about a new result from the OPERA experiment in which neutrinos were observed to travel faster than the speed of light. At the time I commented about how it could still be an error in the data.

Today the same group of experimentalists released an updated report in which they reduce one source of error and still see FTL neutrinos. One criticism of the first result was that the different in flight time of the neutrinos was approximat...

The Hidden Structure of Electrons?

Posted by on Friday, November 18, 2011,
I was watching a lecture a few days ago on particle physics and the latest research into that field, and I was interested in a comment that there is no indication of internal structure for the leptons. Not because I disagree - in all the years of searching for structure through high energy experiments no clear evidence has appeared - but because many people seem unaware of the Koide formula which does seem to indicate some hidden properties of the leptons.

Let me start with some background inf...

I thought I would let everyone reading this know that there will be an interesting astronomical event today. It should arrive around 3:28pm PST today.

And The Prize Goes To Dark Energy!

Posted by on Tuesday, October 4, 2011, In : News
The Nobel prize committee have just announced that the 2011 prize for physics will go to the two teams that inadvertently discovered dark energy (or at least their leaders).

For those who haven't followed this story, here is a brief review.

A couple of days ago I was discussing the four-colour theorem with one of my mathematics students, and I realized that there is some misunderstanding of it even among bright young (amateur) mathematicians. (Not to imply that even older or professional mathematicians don't sometimes misunderstand it as well)

And so I thought I would take this opportunity to give a brief review of some of the overlooked details...

Faster Than Light is Not So Bad

Posted by on Saturday, September 24, 2011,
There has been an article circulating through the popular media which claims physicists at the Large Hadron Collider have observed subatomic particles travelling faster than the speed of light. They claim that this disproves Einstein's theory of relativity, and so are getting a lot of attention. Unfortunately this highlights several flaws in the way scientific results are reported, and perhaps more disturbing proves a lack of physics knowledge by active physicists.

For in spite of the claims m...

I just finished watching the final episode of Daily Planet with Jay Ingram, and it made me more than a little nostalgic. ( OK, so maybe the title is a little too dramatic, but in my opinion this show deserves it!).

For those of you who live outside of Canada, let me start by explaining this show a little. Way back in 1995, when no one had really heard of the Discovery Channel, long before the creation of popular shows like Mythbusters or Dirty Jobs, an idea was formed for a nightly TV show wh...

Office Software:  OpenOffice (replaces Microsoft Office or the Corel Packages)

Mathematics Software: SageMath (basic alternative to Mat...

An Interesting Rumor...

Posted by Chris Bird on Saturday, July 10, 2010,
I realize most of the people who read my entries aren't that interested in physics, but this is potentially such a big discovery that I am going to write about it anyway.

There is a rumor circulating that the Tevatron accelerator has discovered the Higgs boson! (I'll wait for the stunned awe to fade...)

Maybe I should give some background information. Long before I was born, in the 1960's, three physicists made an interesting discovery. They realized that if the fundamental particles of nature ...

The Scanning is Done!

Posted by Chris Bird on Monday, July 5, 2010,
Or at least that is my hope.

For the last four years I have been spending my weekends (when I have no other chores) scanning my parent's photo books and negatives. I have photos dating as far back as the early 1800s, right up to modern day. My collection now spans five double density DVDs of scanned photos and around 25 of my own photos.  Every time I am just about to finish it, someone finds another book or six. But I have scanned the final photo that I know of, so hopefully there are no mor...

Happy Father's Day!

Posted by Chris Bird on Sunday, June 20, 2010, In : Events
HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!!

It's Fathers day again, and day set aside to celebrate the special memories of our father's or grandfather's, or even a kind uncle. Many years ago I saw this article, so I am reprinting it here:

Everyone remembers Mother's day easily, but I think they sometimes forget the special role a father has in a child's life.

Who else would let you climb a tree, fall out, and try again because it "builds character"?

Who else can see the beauty of a rusted out piece of junk that might ...

A Family History Worry...

Posted by Chris Bird on Thursday, June 10, 2010, In : News
I had a slight shock today, and I am really hoping it doesn't turn into an even sadder event.

The two heritage homes that my great-grandfather built a century ago have been put up for sale. They are registered as heritage homes, but apparently they never received the full protected status and so they could be demolished now.

They are next-door to a large condo development, and the owner of a recently burned-down duplex nearby has said he would like to put in townhouses across the street from t...

My Photography Addiction...

Posted by Chris Bird on Wednesday, May 26, 2010,
One year ago today my camera broke, and I had to replace it with a new one.

Today I realized that in that single year, I have taken 6,565 photos with my new camera, and another 3,235 photos with my dSLR camera. That is a total of 9,800 photos in a single year, as well as countless hours of HD video. I might have a problem :(

But then I remember back to when I got my first camera. When I could take 12 photos and then pay $20 to wait a week and discover that they hadn't turned out. Back when you ...

International Geek Appreciation Day!

Posted by Chris Bird on Tuesday, May 25, 2010, In : Events
That's right, it is finally here again - International Geek Appreciation Day!

It is also known in some circles as Towel Day due to the influence of Douglas Adams, so everyone must carry their towel around for the day. In other groupings it is known as the 33rd anniversary of the opening of the first Star Wars movie.

Personally, I will be celebrating tonight with my dearest robots, and maybe giving them gifts of new algorithms for their programming.

Happy IGAD everyone!

Where is the Antimatter? - UPDATE

Posted by Chris Bird on Tuesday, May 18, 2010, In : News
The Fermilab today released some preliminary findings of a particle reaction that produces slightly more matter than antimatter, possible explaining why there is so much matter in the visible Universe but no antimatter.

In nature there are two types of massive particle, dubbed by scientists as matter and antimatter. When the two meet they destroy each other and convert their masses to pure energy. And in every experiment conducted thus far, they are produced and destroyed in exactly equal amou...

Rebirth of a Screensaver

Posted by Chris Bird on Saturday, May 15, 2010, In : News
As some loyal readers may already know, about ten years ago I wrote a series of screen savers based on the chaos game method of fractal generation. These were quite popular (especially with the U.S. military for some strange unknown reason) and were downloaded thousands of times.

However I quit maintaining them due to an overwhelming amount of other work and responsibilities, and so they faded from use.

Well, in the last few months I managed to find a few spare minutes to re-write them using fo...

More Conflict in the Universe

Posted by Chris Bird on Sunday, May 9, 2010,
As I predicted, the debate over dark matter detection has already heated up. (See my last post for the background details)

The three experiments with positive dark matter signals (DAMA, CDMS-II, and CoGent) are standing by their results, and at least two of these groups have raised serious concerns about the XENON experiment. And probably with good reason.

The three prior experiments had long runs before publishing results, while XENON has run for approximately 11 days. They will run for longer...

The Mysterious Dark Matter Detections

Posted by Chris Bird on Thursday, May 6, 2010, In : News
I read an interesting article today on new experimental data from the XENON dark matter search. But first I should give a little background...

For the last few decades there has been growing evidence that the majority of matter in the Universe is in some unknown exotic form. All we know about it is that it has a mass, and that it doesn't interact very much if at all with light. There are literally thousands of proposed models for dark matter, and it seems at times that there are just as many e...

People I Am Not...Volume 1

Posted by Chris Bird on Sunday, April 25, 2010, In : People I Am Not
I came to a startling conclusion a few weeks ago that I am not the only person in the world named Chris Bird. Imagine that - the creative name my parents thought of was not unique?

I realized this when some friends searched for me on Facebook and found (at the time) over 1000 entries for 'Chris Bird'. On Google it is even worse.

And so I introduce a series of blog entries titled 'People I Am Not' to help clear up the confusion.

  • I AM a Canadian physicist and amateur roboticist, computer programm...

In Memoriam...

Posted by Chris Bird on Friday, April 23, 2010,
Today marks the third anniversary of my father's death

So to mark the occasion, I ventured out to the burial park today to clean up his headstone, take a few photos while the weather is suitable, and leave flowers for all of my other relatives buried there. Not that I really need an excuse to wander through the trees and gardens at the cemetery.

Royal Oak Burial Park, Section S. My father's place is under the
Himalayan white birch, towards the park bench.

Addicted to Education...

Posted by Chris Bird on Saturday, April 17, 2010,
I have a problem, and I am willing to admit it. I seem to have become addicted to education and coursework. After finishing my degree last year completing 25 years of education, I should have known I couldn't quit suddenly.

Long ago when I was an undergraduate student, I had wanted to study more on computer science and electrical engineering, but it didn't fit into my schedule in my final year.  (I had done all the coursework for the first 2 1/2 years of a degree in engineering as electives, b...

Birthday Celebration

Posted by Chris Bird on Sunday, April 11, 2010,
OK, so maybe it isn't really a birthday celebration. However today would have been my father's 68th birthday if he were still alive, and so we went out to his favourite restaurant for dinner. And normally it wouldn't be worth mentioning, but I was inspired by thinking of the history of this place.

The restaurant is Brady's fish-and-chip shop, and it has been in the neighbourhood for at least sixty years. My father recalled attending elementary school as a child and walking down to the shop eac...

Nature Hates Me...

Posted by Chris Bird on Monday, April 5, 2010,
Maybe not, but it sure feels like it this weekend. The windstorm here on the coast has been so bad that it is destroying stuff that hasn't been moved in twenty years.

I have lost two outdoor thermometers (one dating back to the 1980's), a portable greenhouse (which has been torn to shreds by the storm), and dozens of bonsai trees. Many of my other bonsai trees lost their labels in the storm, and I have no idea what they are. So I may be spending the next few weekends with a guidebook trying t...

How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the LHC

Posted by Chris Bird on Wednesday, March 31, 2010,
With the news that the Large Hadron Collider has started colliding particles, there has been a lot of mis-information flowing on the hazards of subatomic black holes and other dangers of high energy physics. This seems to be a combination of chicken-littles who love to panic, members of the media who love a scandal, and scientists who are too enamored of their own theories or experiments to give practical information on the LHC to the public.

Since I am also a trained physicist, let me say cle...

My Grandmother's Funeral

Posted by Chris Bird on Saturday, March 20, 2010, In : Events
I just got back from my grandmother's funeral, and from the celebrations of the family. (Photos of the event are posted at my facebook account.)

As I wrote before, my grandmother was 87 years old and suffering from many ailments. So although it is sad to see anyone in the family pass away, when they have had a full life and can no longer enjoy themselves it is perhaps a blessing for them to be released.

I was glad to see that the funeral was held as a celebration of life, and that the entire ...

More Fun :(

Posted by Chris Bird on Friday, March 12, 2010, In : News
I think the fates above decided that I didn't quite have a bad enough week yet, because two days ago they made my internet connection die on me. And then when I phoned the company for information, I encountered the more 'interesting' automated calling system I have ever heard of.
Since I have my internet with the same company that used to carry my cell phone, as soon as I phone them through my landline, their system assumes that I must want the cell phone department. And it doesn't give any ...

My Grandmother's Death

I just got word this afternoon that my grandmother passed away this morning at 8:10am.

She had been suffering with diabetes, dementia, and for a while a fractured hip. In the end it was renal failure that took her life at 87 years old.

The funeral should  be sometime this week, and after that is over with I will write more.

The Best Laid Plans...

As some of you remember, about ten years ago I wrote a series of screensavers based on the chaos game methods of generating fractals. At the time they were very popular, and had tens of thousands of downloads.

Then in 2002 I got busy with other responsibilities and quit updating them,

Well, this weekend I finally seemed to have enough freetime to rewrite them using OpenGL so that they would work with the latest graphics processors. Or at least I thought I did...

My Office Must Be Haunted...

Posted by Chris Bird on Wednesday, February 10, 2010, In : News
There have been several electrical problems in my office in the last month, so the only sane and rational conclusion is that it must be haunted...

In the span of less than thirty days, I have had five short but total blackouts that only affect my office, two routers that had the AC/DC power adapters burn out, the power supply in my computer burned out, two CFL lights burn out, a cd player turn itself on in the night, and several light flickers.
Before this year started, I have never had any ad...

I just got back after celebrating Robbie Burn's day with family and friends. There was far too much haggis, potato, and turnips to eat, so I may need a few days to recover from the feast. At least the bagpipe music was played better than my skill level, so I won't be deaf tomorrow...

Technical Difficulties

It would seem that there was some sort of technical difficulty with my blog so that the last few months of entries were deleted. I can't rewrite them all, but here is a summary of the last few months:

October:
  •  I found a roofer to do my roof, and they say it will be a one or two day job. At the two week mark they aren't even half finished yet. I will give them the benefit of the doubt and say it was due to bad weather.

This is irritating...

A Busy Day...

I have just finished a very busy day (and night) of work.

But first I want to thank those individuals who bought me a nice new camera lens to celebrate my graduation. I am sure it will be used a lot and I will be certain to post the results here.

However the busy happened because my CPU started to give out after only five years of extreme overclocking (it's almost like the warnings not to overclock that much are valid :-0 )

So I replaced the CPU, but to accomodate the one I wanted to use I also...

I'm The Greatest!

Perhaps that is a bit of an overstatement, but I am feeling important.

I googled my name, and lo-and-behold I find that I have the top place in the search results! That may not be an accomplishment for some people, but consider that there are several thousands or even tens of thousands of people who share the name 'Chris Bird'.  And that list includes a reporter, a noted biologist, an ornithologist, and even four other physicists!

I am so proud of myself right now :)

Another Injustice...

Posted by Chris Bird on Tuesday, June 23, 2009, In : News
I knew this week was going too well...

I found out this morning that my best friend is being forced to move because the landlord is throwing a tantrum. About ten years ago the property in question was damaged by a neighbouring renter, and the landlord ignored it. Now the municipality has ordered it repaired at a cost of $1100, and the landlord has responded by telling the tenants to either pay that amount in addition to rent, or to move out. (Personally I think they should talk to a lawyer, be...
