New Year's Revolution!

December 31, 2010
Well, my last posting was a review of everything that I have accomplished in the last year. This posting is a listing of what I hope to accomplish in the coming year. Check back in 365 days to see if I was right...

  1. I am going to try to get out more. Those who know me know that 99% of the time I can be found in front of one of many computer systems or at my robotics bench. Apparently there is this new thing called real reality - just like virtual reality except it actually exists! So hopefully in the new year I will be out in the real world and spend less time in my virtual world of gadgets and gizmos!
  2. I am going to attempt to be more social. As a proud member of geek society, I tend to talk only through electronics means such as texting and tweeting. I will endeavor in the new year to actually speak a little more and maybe even leave my office/laboratory!
  3. I am going to try to be less cynical in my blog and other comments. (As if that could ever happen :) )
  4. For the last year I have been pulled away from my interests and hobbies because too many people want me to solve their problems for them. In the new year I shall try to remind them that I have a life too (as hard as that may be to believe) and so they should first attempt a solution themselves.
  5. Which leads into my next resolution - to finally finalize the editing of several research papers that have been growing old on my desk. Hopefully in the next few months I will finally have sufficient time to edit them and get them out to the journals. Same goes for several patent applications I have been working on.
  6. Finally, I hope to spend more time in 2011 enjoying my life and less time worrying about all the trivial problems. We are here to live and enjoy life, not to fret and frown about what isn't right!
So that is my plan for 2011. I predict that of the six, only one or two will come to pass but that is still one or two better than where I am at now. So to all my friends and family (who are no doubt still laughing at my resolutions), enjoy the new year and may it be a happy and prosperous time for us all!

The Year in Review

December 23, 2010

As 2010 comes to an end, it is a time to reflect on the past year. It has been a year of highs and lows in my family, but overall we have been fortunate.

This was the year that my grandma died at age 87, and that event brought all of her children to Victoria to attend her funeral and reconnect with each other. Unfortunately it was also the year that decisions had to be made about her estate, and those decisions divided the family – perhaps permanently. Over the years grandma had promised he...

No Black Holes, No Surprise

December 20, 2010
I noticed this article on the news this morning, regarding the latest results from the LHC on micro-black holes. But allow me to start with a brief review of the subject...

According to Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, it is possible for an object to become so massive that not even light can escape it. This is called a black hole, and it requires a huge amount of mass and energy compressed into a small region. The energies required to produce even a tiny black hole at a particle accele...

A Christmas Thought

December 12, 2010

I saw this poem/commentary a few years back, and I think it is worth re-posting here:

I awake on Christmas morning, warm and comfortable on the sofa.

I couldn't wait for the morning to come, so I snuck down and slept with the tree and the presents, full of excitement and anticipation for the day to come.

All the lights are dark except for the tree, and the colors are reflecting off the walls and the floor in all shades of the rainbow.

The ornaments twinkle with reflected light and reflectio...

Final Exam Tutorials...

December 1, 2010

In response to the requests I have been receiving over the last few days, I am going to hold a limited number of physics and mathematics tutorial sessions in preparation for final exams. I will of course be available for one-on-one tutoring as in previous years, and this year I am also going to try some group sessions (at a lower rate).

I am willing to tutor in any of my fields of expertise, which includes undergraduate and graduate level physics (any course), undergraduate and graduate level...

Remember...

November 11, 2010

It is Rememberance Day again, a time for all of us to take some time out of our busy lives and remember all of the men and women who have defended this country and protected the innocent around the world. They have done a lot for us, and too often are forgotten when they are no longer needed.

I always like to take this opportunity to think about all of my family members who have served, and how rough it was for them and how much they have sacrificed.

First on the list is my grandpa, Ernie F...

New Venture

October 29, 2010
As I alluded to a few days ago, I have been asked to market some of my artwork in the form of greeting cards and mousepads through the Zazzle company. Well I am proud to announce that the first group of products is ready for sale, and can be ordered directly from my store.

There aren't too many products yet, but I expect to increase the line in the coming weeks and months. So go over there and check it out!

What a Busy Week!

October 19, 2010
I enjoy so many different things that I have ended up with a diverse range of skills. Normally this would be a good thing - and it really is - but it has ended up with a very busy week for me.

In the last week I have:
  • Held about a dozen 1-on-1 tutoring sessions
  • Held two group tutorials/drop-in sessions - one in physics and one in math
  • Finalized the designs for a new line of greeting cards based on my artwork
  • Proofread the preliminary draft of a new physics textbook for a colleague of mine
  • Written t...

I'm On Wikipedia!

October 7, 2010
Well, technically it is my dictionary website, The Grandiloquent Dictionary.

I was told today that someone has created an entry on Wikipedia for my website - although I understand it is only a two line entry with links to the website and to my personal homepage.

I actually had someone post it before, but it was taken down by the management because they thought I had done it to promote my site. I want to state clearly that I have never created my own wiki entry and I would never abuse their ser...

The First Glint of Extrasolar Life?

October 6, 2010
There was an interesting astronomy news story a few days ago that I wanted to pass along. A team of astronomers has discovered the first planet outside of our own solar system that has the right temperatures to support liquid water and life.

Although scientists are usually cautious about such things, it is possible (though admittedly improbable) that this new planet has life on it. Of course it is many light-years away, so no one is going to go there to check in the near future.

Consider that...
