More Promotions

October 6, 2010
I just received the news that my colleagues at Lonrach R&T have been given a donation from an anonymous donor for the purpose of creating a robotics development branch, tentatively called Victus Robotics. As I understand it, this new company will focus on producing circuit designs for robotics components and home or office automation, with some being open source and some being proprietary.

I am old enough to remember the rise of computers as a household tool, and I firmly believe that domestic robotics now is where computers were in about 1990. A decade from now I expect every household and office to have at least a couple of domestic robots of some form, so I am really excited to have this chance to be a part of building the future.

I am eagerly anticipating the challenges that this new company will provide to me and my associates in Lonrach.

Promoting a New Business

September 30, 2010
I want to take this opportunity to promote a new venture that some of my friends from the online mathematics & robotics communities have started, and which I am proud to be associated with. Their company is called Lonrach Research & Technology, and they are trying to build connections between academics like myself and the business community by helping recent graduates in the sciences and technology fields find short-term consulting and sub-contractor work with industry and government departme...

Finally a Holiday

September 22, 2010
Forgive my bad typing in this entry. I am in a remote location with no wifi only cell and typing by candle. I am on vacation!

All summer I got delayed from holidays. Now I have some time, so I drove to my refuge on the island and will stay a few days. I am shocked and awed that I get cell reception here and can tweet and blog. (There is nothing else to do after sunset with no computers or TVs)

It is nice to leave the city sometimes and be on the beach with nature.

In Memoriam

September 11, 2010
My cockatiel Goldie died today at 4:00pm.

This story begins on February 7,1987 when my dad rescued this little bird. He had been mistreated when he was young, and the result was that he would be aggressive with other birds (and many people). No one wanted the little guy because of this, and he was to be euthanized. My dad felt sorry for him, and brought Goldie home to live with us.

Goldie soon had control of the house. He was allowed to fly free in our home, and would go wherever he chose. When...

Flowers Are Red!

September 8, 2010
I just cannot resist - in honour of the first day of school - posting the lyrics to one of the all-time great back-to-school songs:

The little boy went first day of school
He got some crayons and started to draw
He put colors all over the paper
For colors was what he saw
And the teacher said.. What you doin' young man
I'm paintin' flowers he said
She said... It's not the time for art young man
And anyway flowers are green and red
There's a time for everything young man
And a way it should be done
You've...

Back-to-School

September 7, 2010
Where did the summer go? It seems like it just got started, and suddenly it is over.

To all the students starting University, enjoy this time of your life. Long ago when I started, a prof told me that this is the start of your real education. Now you get to choose your own courses and your own field of study. It is entirely up to you to decide what to do with this chance.

I know from my own experience that the first days of University can be terrifying and exciting at the same time. But remem...

Back-to-School OpenSource

August 29, 2010
This is a completely trivial posting, but some friends requested this information and I thought others may benefit from it. Apparently some parents are having financial problems due to purchasing software for their children's school needs. So here are a few links to free (and legal) alternatives which are as good as or better than their commercial counterparts.

Office Software:  OpenOffice (replaces Microsoft Office or the Corel Packages)

Mathematics Software: SageMath (basic alternative to Mat...

An Interesting Rumor...

July 10, 2010
I realize most of the people who read my entries aren't that interested in physics, but this is potentially such a big discovery that I am going to write about it anyway.

There is a rumor circulating that the Tevatron accelerator has discovered the Higgs boson! (I'll wait for the stunned awe to fade...)

Maybe I should give some background information. Long before I was born, in the 1960's, three physicists made an interesting discovery. They realized that if the fundamental particles of nature ...

The Scanning is Done!

July 5, 2010
Or at least that is my hope.

For the last four years I have been spending my weekends (when I have no other chores) scanning my parent's photo books and negatives. I have photos dating as far back as the early 1800s, right up to modern day. My collection now spans five double density DVDs of scanned photos and around 25 of my own photos.  Every time I am just about to finish it, someone finds another book or six. But I have scanned the final photo that I know of, so hopefully there are no mor...

Happy Father's Day!

June 20, 2010
HAPPY FATHER'S DAY!!

It's Fathers day again, and day set aside to celebrate the special memories of our father's or grandfather's, or even a kind uncle. Many years ago I saw this article, so I am reprinting it here:

Everyone remembers Mother's day easily, but I think they sometimes forget the special role a father has in a child's life.

Who else would let you climb a tree, fall out, and try again because it "builds character"?

Who else can see the beauty of a rusted out piece of junk that might ...
