Most of you probably remember the big
online protest a few months back when the internet temporarily shut
down to protest draconian cyber-spying laws. Well, being a community
of engineers and hackers, a new project is being launched, dubbed
the darknetplan in which individuals and organizations are
building an alternate internet which should be better protected
against government interference.
Part of the plan will include users
building their own servers and networks that will form a mesh, and
will no longer rely on internet service providers. One participant
has already published a DIY guide to a wikipedia server which is
solar powered.
Of course there are some serious
downsides of moving to an internet with no regulations at all (namely
stopping real criminals) but until governments find a way to coexist
with the new era of information exchange and international
communications, these sorts of user networks are only going to become
more prevalent.
