January 21, 2006 - I tried to set up a couple of meetings to find out if there are any programs to help me manage tending my parents and still doing my graduate work. Unfortunately two departments I talked to couldn't think of any options for me, and the third (which is specifically for aiding caregivers) won't even call me back. There doesn't seem to be an assistance available and so I go on working over 100 hours per week.

January 17, 2006 - I have finished assembling my newest robot, and he is happily wandering my office right now. Somehow he has already received a nickname from some friends of mine - henceforth he will be known as 'Herbie'.

January 12, 2006 - Aside from being birthday #29, I also get to celebrate publishing another research paper to the arXiv. This one is an extended version of my last paper, and proves that our idea of searching for dark matter in B-meson decays works for several different models. This is also my first paper written primarily by myself, and the first time I have been invited to contribute to a journal.

January 11, 2006 - I see that today's seminar on campus is by Paul Steinhardt, who is a well known researcher working in early Universe physics and such things. This could be a very good lecture, and hopefully Dr. Steinhardt will review his recent work on cosmology before the Big Bang.

January 4, 2006 - I thought I would be continuing with marking introductory papers this term, but instead I have been asked to assist with the third year quantum mechanics course. Fortunately that was my best class as a student!

December 3, 2005 - I am starting on a new project on nucleosynthesis that could be a very important work. I hope to publish it in the early spring if everything goes well. I will give more details once I am closer to publishing.

November 2, 2005 - A few people have asked me to explain my research to them in less technical terms, so in answer I have written out simple explanations and posted them here.

September 8, 2005 - I had to leave work early today - I got a phone call that my father had wandered off and so I had to go back home to search for him. It turned out he had just fallen down by the school, and he couldn't get back up. Hopefully I can reschedule everything for tomorrow or later in the week.

September 1, 2005 - Back to classes time again. I am not taking classes this year, but I am marking papers for an introductory physics course. With over 100 students in that course I should be kept very busy.

July 20,2005 - Once again I had to cut my trip short, because once again I was needed at home to look after my parents. This is becoming a growing problem...

July 17, 2005 - My last day of work for a few days. I am going up-island for a working holiday (ie a camping trip with the condition that I have to do annual maintenance on my campsite). I will post some photos to my website when I get back.

June 17, 2005 - Wish me luck. I am going off to my 10 year high school reunion this weekend...

June 3, 2005 - I will be away from my office for the next week or so, as I am attending the annual CAP conference and the Theory Canada conference in Vancouver this week. It looks like it could be very interesting.

May 13, 2005 - I am heading off to another conference - this time it is the APS-NW annual event. It is really far away - a whole three minute walk to the other side of the UVic campus :)

February 17, 2005 - I have finished posting a few more of the fractal screensavers I wrote to my website. Feel free to try them out. These are interesting algorithms in that they produce very complicated fractal designs using only random numbers.

January 11, 2005 - The snow and ice on the hill in front of my house has finally melted! So after being snowed in for the last week or so, I can finally get out of here and get back to work!
