November 27, 2014Happy Thanksgiving to all of my American friends and family. I hope you are all able to enjoy the day with those you truly love, even if it is just yourselves!

November 26, 2014 - For those who always wanted to be part of the LHC search for the Higgs boson, now you can do the next best thing. The website higgshunters.org has been set up for the public to help physicists search for rare decays of Higgs bosons using the LHC data. It is a fun way to get involved, and could lead to important discoveries in sub-atomic physics.

November 22, 2014 - With the Christmas shopping season starting, I thought I would add a shameless plug for my zazzle store. I plan to expand it in the future to include nerdy stuff, but for the moment it is just artwork and photographs on various items. But they make great Christmas gifts :)

November 12, 2014-  After a decade long journey, sometime this morning the Philae lander will part from the Rosetta probe in orbit around comet Chury 67P and attempt to land on the surface.  Those who wish to stay awake for the next few hours can watch the live broadcast here.
UPDATE: As many of you already know, the landing was a complete success and the Philae probe is already sending back data and photos!

November 11, 2014 - Remembrance Day. Let us each take a moment out of our busy schedules to remember all of those who sacrificed to protect our freedoms. Lest we forget...

November 1, 2014 - There is an interesting kickstarter project being promoted now, with the goal of writing a guidebook for BEAM robotics. For those who are not familiar with the term, BEAM robots do not use any advanced IC chips or programming, but develop complex behaviors from basic circuitry. Those who wish to donate to the cause can do so here

November 1, 2014 - There is some tragic news this morning from the Virgin Galactic team. They were testing their spacecraft using a new fuel, and something went horribly wrong. The pilot has died, and apparently another person on board was injured. Truly sad news for such a groundbreaking project.

October 31, 2014 - HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

October 30, 2014 - Sometime in the wee hours of the morning my website passed 20,000 views. It is quite humbling to realize that over the past five years that I have been using this counter, so many people have come for a virtual visit. Thank you everyone!

October 28, 2014 - As part of my annual pumpkin carving this year I decided to test some alternative carving techniques, and to provide brief reviews for others who are interested. The results of my experiments can be found here.

October 26, 2014 - With the arrival of Halloween next week, I have once again had inquiries into my pumpkin artwork and photography. For those who are interested, two great sources of patterns and templates are PumpkinGlow and Zombie Pumpkins. I have had a lot of success in past years with their designs (interested viewers can see my own artwork from 2001-2005,2005-2011, and 2012-2013. Some, but not all, of these are based on Zombie designs).

October 13, 2014 - HAPPY THANKSGIVING CANADA!!

October 7, 2014 - Congratulations to Isamu Akasaki, Hiroshi Amano & Shuji Nakamura on winning the 2014 Nobel Prize in Physics. They are the leaders of the group that developed efficient blue light LEDs that have made it possible to have energy efficient white light sources. A worthy choice for the biggest prize in physics.
