June 2, 2003 - I have finally taken the leap and converted my office computer to run entirely on Linux using the RedHat distribution. From what I have seen so far I am glad I made that change.

May 1, 2003 - My first research paper has been published to the arXiv online, and is available for anyone who wants to read it. Hopefully it will be published in a journal very soon.

February 14,2003 - In case anyone missed it, the Wilkinson Microwave Anisotropy Probe has released a new set of data this week, and provided some of the strongest constraints on the properties of the Universe, and all by analyzing the microwave radiation temperature differences in different parts of the sky. Of particular interest is the confirmation that 95% of the energy in the Universe is of unknown type. Their paper can be found here.

January 12, 2003 - My old office printer gave out yesterday, so as a birthday present to myself I bought a new one - a Canon i550.

October 11,2002 - I am leaving for Thanksgiving holidays now, so I will see everyone next week. Happy Thanksgiving everyone :)

September 30, 2002 - After procrastinating for a few months, I finally found enough spare time over the weekend to install a wireless network in my house. This way I won't always have to shuffle cables and move equipment everytime I want to work on my laptop. And if I can manage it, I may even make an open hotspot for the neighbourhood to use.

September 2, 2002 - Back to classes for another year. This will be my seventh year at UVic. Fortunately this year I am taking one course on particle physics (which I don't need, but I may need the credits later). At least it is an interesting topic.

August 2, 2002 - Happy Day! I have been saving for a long time, and today I finally received my new telescope. It is an 8-inch reflector with motorized an equatorial mount. The observing in town is horrible, but I am hoping to go up to my parent's summer cabin next weekend and stargaze.

June 19, 2002 -My father officially retired from the hospital today after 34 years of working as a physiotherapist (although he has been on sick leave for the last four years). His staff threw a party for him, so I actually got a couple of hours to do my research.

May 29, 2002 - I have fulfilled a childhood dream and bought a proper telescope. Now that I am fully funded I can afford it, and hopefully I can do some observing in evenings once I am done with my chores each day.

May 20, 2002 - I am moving back to UVic fulltime now, and sometime this summer I will start work with my new graduate advisor on campus.

March 7,2002 - For the first time in 3 1/2 years my father managed to walk outside of the house. I hope this means I can spend more time at school and less time looking after things at home.

January 4, 2002 - I am now funded my a Natural Science and Engineering Research Council Post-graduate Fellowship, so for the next two years at least I will be able to do my work without worries about money. I understand only one other student in the department received one this year, so it is a real honour.

November 30, 2001 - I would also like to thank my graduate adviser, Dr. Harold Fearing, for his support and patience through the last two years, as I completed my research and graduate thesis in less than ideal circumstances. I am truly grateful for everything that you have done for me.

November 30, 2001 - Finally received my Master's degree after a lot of obstacles over the past two years. It is such a relief to have passed this hurdle, and now on to better things (and hopefully less silliness with the hospital system!)

November 4, 2001 - I am preparing to head over to Vancouver to give another lecture on regularization methods in relativistic chiral perturbation theory.  I should be back in a day or two.

September 9, 2001 - I have just defended my master's degree thesis, and will be graduating in November. Or at least I would be if I weren't planning to continue on to my doctorate.

August 12, 2001 - I am back from my camping trip early. I had barely arrived at the site and spent a couple of hours on maintenance when I got called on my cellphone to come back. Apparently the person who was supposed to take over care of my parent's for the few days decided not to.

August 10, 2001 - My last day of work for a few days. My parent's haven't been able to maintain their summer home for the last three years, so now I have to drive up there and do a lot of yardwork and general repairs. But at least I get to be away from the city for a while...

August 7, 2001 - I have finished distributing my thesis to all my graduate committee members, and now I can focus on preparing to defend it. I expect to hold the defence sometime in September.

July 17, 2001 - I have finished writing my Master's thesis now, and I am just awaiting final proofreading by my advisor.

January 28, 2001 - I just finished assembling my new computer using a collection of parts. It is truly a custom computer now!

January 12, 2001 - Here I am spending my 24th birthday alone in a hotel room in Vancouver. Happy birthday to me...

January 9, 2001 - It turns out that the class I wanted to take at UBC has been scrapped completely, not just for one lecture. And the apartment I was supposed to be moving into now says they won't let me stay if I am not taking a class, in spite of the fact that I am doing graduate research on campus. I will try for an off-campus apartment, but the vacancy rate is quite low right now.
