November 16, 2021With record breaking rainfall and wind hitting the coast, and highways and buildings washed away by flooding, I have had a few people inquire as to my own situation. I did have about 10mm of flooding in my basement, and now the carpets smell of death, but otherwise I haven't been affected. I am fortunate to have avoided the worst of it, but will be looking at how I can help others in the community in the coming weeks and months as we all try to recover.

October 31, 2021 - HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!

October 25, 2021 - To be honest, no one knows if we will have Halloween this year. But just in case we do, and for those of you who live in an area without too many infections, I will once again link to some great sources for pumpkin patterns,  PumpkinGlow and Zombie Pumpkins, and give another self promoting link to the galleries of my own carving from Halloweens past.( 2001-2005,2005-20112012-20182019-2020 )

October 11, 2021 - Happy Thanksgiving Canada!! We live in one of the greatest countries in the world, in one of the best eras in history, and many will be celebrating this day with their loved ones (or if all else fails, their families). We truly have much to be thankful for today, and it is always worth taking the time to remind ourselves of that fact. Enjoy the holidays everyone!

October 5, 2021 - The Nobel Prize in Physics for 2021 has just been announced, and the winner is climate change! To be more accurate, it has recognized the development of complex mathematical models related to fluid dynamics and climate science, and its use in analyzing the current climate crisis. Given all of the events of the past couple of years, it does seem like a very appropriate choice!

September 5, 2021 - I was awoken this morning by an odd noise, only to discover a rooster has taken up residency in my backyard. (I am not quite in the urban center, but it is also not a farming community by any stretch of the imagination). A few hours later the rooster was fighting with the local squirrel population. Another surreal day in Saanich...

August 12, 2021 - I don't usually promote Youtube videos, but the wonderful channel Veritasium has published a great review of Relativity Space and their 3D printed rocket technologies. I would urge anyone with an interest in either field to check it out here.

July 27, 2021 - Another bit of sad news today for the physics community, with the passing of Steven Weinberg. He was not only a Nobel Laureate and well respected expert in several branches of theoretical physics, but was also a very talented writer and lecturer who brought modern physics to the general public with his many books and articles. He was 88, and yet still died far too soon.

July 1, 2021 - HAPPY CANADA DAY!!

June 20, 2021 - Happy Father's Day to all the fathers and grandfathers in the world!

June 1, 2021 - Just a bit of news for my fellow University of Victoria alumni, there is some sad news today with the announcement that Dr. Reg Mitchell has passed away. To most of the community he is better known as Dr. Zonk, the green-haired chemist who demonstrated cool chemistry experiments to school children (and many adults) for over thirty years at public events and lectures. He was a skilled chemistry researcher, and an even better educator, and he will be missed by the local scientific community.
