News

January 11, 2016 - In response to those who have been asking, I have also been hearing the rumors that the LIGO experiment has a confirmed detection of a gravitational wave. I am not yet convinced of it, but other sources seem to be supporting this rumor. If true, I will post details on my science blog as soon as they are announced.

January 5, 2016My latest book `Random Thoughts On The Universe` is now published and available for sale. For now it can only be purchased from the publisher at http://www.lulu.com/shop/christopher-s-bird/random-thoughts-on-the-universe/paperback/product-22496305.html, but if there is sufficient interest I will arrange to have it sold through other book sellers as well.

January 1, 2016 - HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

December 29, 2015 - With all the media hype surrounding the earthquake tonight, I thought I should assure everyone that I was not affected. Apparently it was a magnitude 4.8 earthquake centered about 20km north of where I live. However all I noticed was a slight rumbling like something heavy had dropped off a shelf. It was only later while watching the news that I learned there had been an actual earthquake. But I am alright and have not been affected in any way at all by it.

December 25, 2015 - MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

December 19, 2015 - Thank you to all of the people who have complimented my latest Christmas artwork, and for those who asked for the method of adding Christmas lights, I have written a brief tutorial here. I am glad it was enjoyed!

December 16, 2015 - After nearly a year and a half, the IAU's Name The Exoplanet contest is over and the winning names have been decided upon. In spite of early fears that the contest would be hijacked by special interest groups, the final choices seem to be a well thought out and appropriate collection of names. They can be viewed here.

December 4, 2015 - The New Horizons team has just released high-def photos and video from the Pluto flyby a few months ago. It is amazing to think of how far away Pluto is, and yet because of science and technology here we have great video footage of it. The video can be viewed here.

December 4, 2015 - I just received a notification from my publisher that they have had a technical problem with their printers, and so my book release will be delayed. I am also hearing unconfirmed rumors that they might have a new paper supplier, and the quality might not be as good. I would suggest people delay purchasing the newest book until I can confirm that it will be printed at the high quality I expect from my publisher.

December 1, 2015 - After many weeks of hard work, my latest book entitled `Random Thoughts On The Universe` has just been sent to the publisher! This one is a little different than the previous ones, as it is not so much a reference book or a single-themed science book, but rather it is a compilation of various articles that I have written over the past five years on a variety of topics related to mathematics and physics (in truth most of these articles are already available for free on different websites, including my own blog on this website, but some people prefer a printed version). For now it is only being sold through the publisher, and can be found here, but if there is sufficient interest I will arrange for it to go to Amazon and other large bookshops as well.

November 29, 2015 - With classes wrapping up for the year, I have had a few requests for tutoring sessions. Unfortunately I have so many other projects pressing right that I am not going to have any spare time for tutoring this year. I do enjoy it, and I am hoping to get back to it in the new year though and will probably offer sessions in the spring semester.

November 26, 2015 - Happy Thanksgiving to all of my American friends and family!
