News

May 15, 2020 - Just a quick update on the status of my mobile website - I tried to contact the tech support staff at my webhosting service, and discovered that due to the virus they are no longer operating. They had told me in April that they would continue to investigate the issues, but apparently that has now changed. I will provide further updates as I receive them.

May 1, 2020 - I have learned today that some browsers are flagging my website as being insecure and warning users not to enter sensitive information. I am not sure why this is happening, since my website has never collected any information from visitors and I have not made any changes in recent months that would changes its security status anyway. I will continue to look into this matter and post updates as I receive them.

April 12, 2020 - HAPPEASTER!!

April 12, 2020 - Incredibly sad news today, with the announcement that the legendary mathematician John Horton Conway has died from COVID-19. He may not be as famous outside of academia as some, but his silly little recreational games have resulted in some of the most interesting fields of mathematical research. He is responsible for the Game of Life that made cellular automata interesting to researchers around the world, and his work on surreal numbers is still the subject of a significant amount of serious mathematical research. Add to that his energy and attitude that inspired generations of students at all levels to pursue a mathematics education, and it becomes even more clear what the world has lost today. Rest in peace John.

March 20, 2020 - Due to the uncertainty surrounding COVID-19 / Coronavirus right now, I will not be offering any one-on-one or group tutoring sessions this year. I am also aware that several other tutors have stopped offering tutoring services entirely this year, which is interfering with their students ability to revise for exams. Therefore I am going to offer more tutoring by e-mail, chat rooms, and Skype/Facetime/Video Conferencing. Information can be found here, or by contacting me directly.

March 17, 2020 - HAPPY ST. PATRICK'S DAY!!

March 15, 2020 - Happy Pi Day to all my nerdy and geeky friends and followers!

March 14, 2020 - Update to my previous post - I have now rebuilt the subdomains http://physics.drchrisbird.net and http://robotics.drchrisbird.net, but if anyone spots a glitch please let me know. The remaining sites should follow next week. Thank you everyone for your patience :)

March 12, 2020 - Sometimes you just have to accept that the world is not a just place, and if you want something done right you have to do it yourself. And of course I am referring to the websites that I maintain through IslandHosting which were hacked last October. The support team at IslandHosting still hasn't been able to restore these websites, and so I have decided to just rebuild them from scratch. Depending on my schedule, I expect to get one site completed and posted each week. Stay tuned for updates.

February 29, 2020 - I have just received the news that Freeman Dyson, one of the giants of twentieth century physics has passed away at the age of 96. He contributed to many branches of science, including pioneering work in quantum field theory (which nearly won him a Nobel Prize) and space exploration, and spawned numerous science fiction stories with his more speculative work on alien technologies such as Dyson spheres. Condolences to his family and friends, and to the many science students who were inspired by his diverse research and writings.

February 9, 2020 - I've had a few people asking about my other websites, and their continued disabled status. Unfortunately my webhost, IslandHosting, has still been unable to resolve this problem in spite of working on it for over four months now. They still can't give me an estimate on when they might figure out why my websites have gone down, or why (and who) brought them down. I will continue to give updates as I receive them.

January 15, 2020 - Thank you to everyone who has cared enough to ask how my surgery is going/went, but I regret to say that it hasn't happened yet. It was originally suppose to be September, then got bumped to October, then bumped to January, and now the surgeon's office is hoping for March or April. Thus is the nature of an overcrowded and underfunded healthcare system. Personally I am ready to just do it myself in the hospital parking lot :)
