November 2, 2011 - In my continuing nightmare of a hacked account, this morning for about four hours I couldn't even access my website. I don't know if it was a technical glitch or if someone was trying to deny me access, but for the moment it seems resolved. More information as I receive it.

UPDATE: I also learned today that the hacker removed the link to my terms and conditions page. Some users of this site may not have realized that I do have restrictions on who is allowed to acceuss my website and how the content is used. (Although realistically these terms apply to a very small number of users, and are mostly common sense rules)

November 1, 2011 - I have just had a terrible day. I just learned that someone removed the password on parts of my website, and made  private comments public. What is worse, someone added entries to my blog and edited others. For the record, the only blog I maintain for public consumption is my science and tech blog, all others are meant to be private between myself and a very few select friends (hence names like personal blog). If you are accessing one of my private blogs without me giving you a password, then it means my site has been hacked (which for some reason seems to happen to me about twice a year now). And as I said the last time I discovered my website and home network compromised, if you ever see something on here that sounds insulting or aggressive, it is probably not written by me (and as I write on my blogs, I always reserve the right to remove any comments or postings as soon as I am made aware of them and I will always do so). So I will once again be spending the day changing all of my passwords :(

October 31, 2011 - HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

October 20, 2011 - I must apologize to my loyal viewers/readers, as two of my websites went down for the about a day due to server maintenance. I know you are all heartbroken at having to go an entire 24 hours without reading my wit and wisdom ;)

October 10, 2011 - HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

October 6, 2011 -  Another end of era news story today - the great tech guru Steve Jobs has died of cancer at age 56. When you look at how many times this one man has changed society to its core it is really astounding what he achieved!

October 1, 2011 - It is the end of an era in particle physics. The Fermilab Tevatron particle accelerator has been turned off, partly due to the creation of the bigger LHC and partly due to budget cuts, after a long and productive run. It was the Tevatron that found the top quark 16 years ago, and many other less publicized results. Although I never worked on the project, I did use many of their results in my own research and dissertation.

September 29, 2011 - Interesting results from the Bolshoi supercomputer simulation of the Universe. The team used the best measurements of the cosmic parameters and the laws of physics to program a supercomputer to recreate the cooling of the universe after the Big Bang and the formation of galaxies. (Read the papers here and here). For those not into physics and cosmology, there are pretty pictures released by the group as well :)

September 26, 2011 - I just learned that my great-aunt has died at age 94. While I hadn't seen her in a while, we used to visit her often when I was younger. My condolences to her family.

September 22, 2011 - I was reading about a claim that the LHC has discovered neutrinos travelling faster than the speed of light. Since a few people have asked me, I will say here that this does not violate relativity (the reasons are too long for this space, so I will post them in my science blog). In all likelihood it is nothing more than a data analysis error anyway.

September 10, 2011 - I can't believe that it has been an entire year since my old friend died. I still miss him.

September 6, 2011 - I just heard that the CRESST experiment is reporting a possible dark matter discovery. The data seems to support a WIMP at around 12 - 25 GeV of mass, but as those in the business know that is a long way from definitive proof. It is a promising sign, but given the long history of positive results it should be approached with some scepticism.
