October 31, 2012 - HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

October 25, 2012 - For those who would like to help with the search for a cure for cancer, but lack the PhD and million-dollar laboratory, there is a new project online called ClicktoCure. After a brief tutorial online, users look at microscope images of tumor samples and identify different types of cells. Then the scientists running the project can compile the data to analyze trends and hopefully find improved methods of treating cancers.

October 22, 2012 - Just as cyberbullying is in the news, I discover that someone has set up a fake e-mail account address using my mother's information and is spamming people from it. Pretty pathetic really.

October 20, 2012 - I have had a few people ask where I get the templates for my jack-o-lanterns each year. Most of them I actually draw myself, but another great source is Zombie Pumpkins. They always have a great selection of templates at reasonable prices.

October 18, 2012Just a reminder that October is anti-bullying month, and it has unfortunately become especially poignant this year. So whether it is in school, in the workplace, in neighbourhoods, in families, or in politics - let us all strive to put an end to bullying!

October 15, 2012 - As the midterm season approaches again, I would like to remind students of mathematics and physics that I am offering a few tutorial sessions again this year, either in person or via online methods. More details located here.

October 12, 2012 - Once again I will be out of town for a couple of days starting tomorrow, so if there is any urgent business please let me know as soon as possible.

October 10, 2012 - The Nobel Prize for Physics has been announced, and it has been awarded to two physicists who did work in nanotechnology and ultra-small particles, and quantum effects and such. It is really quite interesting work they did.

October 9, 2012 - This must be another of Murphy's laws - today I finally received a new astrophotography mount for my camera after waiting two months for it, and this evening when I went to use it I find the first cloud covered night in about five months and the heaviest fog at the viewing site in years!

October 8, 2012 - Happy Thanksgiving to all of my Canadian friends and family!!

September 30, 2012 - To those whom I promised photos to, there will be a slight delay. My photo hard drive has completely crashed and I am having to order in a replacement and then spend many hours restoring the backup copies. But I will send them out when the time comes.

September 28, 2012 - The University of Victoria is celebrating its 50th anniversary this weekend, with tours and demos and other activities. It is an interesting place filled with interesting people and research. I would encourage everyone who lives nearby to take this opportunity to visit the campus and learn about all of the exciting things going on there.

September 25, 2012 - I just received notification that Lonrach Research & Technology, which was founded and operated by colleagues of mine, has now folded their website (which coincidentally I designed and registered for them). Apparently they had a dispute with the web host over fees, and it is unclear at this point if the company plans to continue without the site. More details will be posted as they become available.
